The meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. by Committee Chair Gene Schurman, Pennsylvania. Gene introduced Committee Vice-Chairs: Randy Mills, Oregon, Western Region; Tammy Cheely, Georgia, Southern Region; Ron Graber, Kansas, North central Region. There were approximately 42 members present.
The 2008-09 committee will be chaired by Randy Mills with Richard Smith, Pennsylvania replacing Gene Schurman as the Northeast Region representative.
Members were invited and asked to sign-up for the Thursday morning breakfast. Approximately 15 did so.
Minutes for the 2007 meeting prepared by Randy Mills were circulated to those present.
Tammy Cheely announced that there are 15 professional improvement seminars for Tuesday. They will be held in two rooms beginning at 1:30 p.m. This year they will be 15 minutes long to accommodate those who want to move between talks. Shelby Filley, Anna-Marie Chamberlain and Tina Savage volunteered to assist with moderating presentations.
Randy Mills circulated some information on ARPAS. He explained what ARPAS is and how it can benefit members. Randy asked those interested in taking the exam to sign up. He will be offering the exams on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Colony A. There is a $25 per specie fee for taking the exam.
Tom Benton, Professional Improvement Council Chair, congratulated the committee for sponsoring activities outside of the AM / PIC.
Gene reported that attendance was short this year for the pre-conference tour. We had funding sponsorship to take 20 agents plus the 4 committee members. This year’s tour was organized and hosted by Barry Foushee, Becky Spearman and Tiffanee Corad-Acuna all Livestock agents in North Carolina. The committee expressed appreciation to them for a well organized educational tour. Troy Downing and Shelby Filley both from Oregon took pictures and presented a slide show highlighting the two day tour. The slide show will be posted on the website for states to use in promoting the tour. Anna-Marie Chamberlain, Becky Spearman and Tiffanee Corad-Acuna will write an article summarizing the tour for the August issue of the County Agent magazine. Randy discussed the 2009 tour in Oregon. Most of the stops are planned. Randy asked for input from the group. They are considering starting the tour in Boise and ending in Portland. This year’s sponsors included: Alltech, $2500; Elanco Animal Health, $2500; National Pork Board, $500; Prestage Farms, $250. The committee will work toward adding more sponsors for next year and would appreciate suggestions and help from others.
Gene discussed and demonstrated how to use the Animal Science mail list /list serve. He explained the purpose of the website and how to sign-up to use it.
Gene also discussed and demonstrated how to use the NACAA animal science WIKI website.
Gene reported that S-PAC has now been approved by the national board and is available to the membership for use. He explained how to sign-up for S-PAC and what it will offer to those interested. The annual membership fee is $75.
Gene presented the 2007-08 Plan of Work. He asked for suggested changes or additions to incorporate into the 2008-09 plan. Chuck Schwartau suggested adding webinars as a form of distance education. A majority of those present were interested. Other ideas that were presented include: a bio-fuel seminar for 2009 AM /PIC, explore how extension agents can provide assistance to producers who are lacking large animal veterinary services and look for a review of grass fed beef information.
Gene presented the 2007-08 budget and discussed the proposed 2008-09 budget. With increased sponsorship and less pre-tour participants the committee faired well this year. Need to adjust for higher projected expenses for next year.
Gene asked those in attendance if there were any other concerns. Seeing none the meeting was adjourned at 2:35 p.m.
Respectively submitted,
Ron Graber
