Attending: Greg Hoover (greg_hoover@ncsu.edu), Sandra M. Frost (sfrost1@uwyo.edu), tony (Verne) Anderson (tanderson1@unl.edu), Tim Jergenson (tim.jergenson@ces.uwex.edu), Matt Hanson (matt.hanson@ces.uwex.edu), Jim Endress (jendress@uiuc.edu), Susan Kerr (kerrs@wsu.edu), Willie Chance (wchance@uga.edu), Ken Balliet (klb260@psu.edu) and Karen Vines (kvines@psu.edu) serving as chair.
Eleven members indicated they would like to attend the Thursday morning breakfast.
A review of the status of the vice-chairs and chairmanship was reviewed. The southern and north central vice-chair positions held by Greg and Matt expire next year. Both are eligible for reappointment for another two-year form. They would need to complete the application which is available on-line. Also, Karen’s term as chair expires next year. She encouraged Greg and Matt to consider accepting this responsibility next year.
The committee reviewed accomplishments for 2006-07. Two new workshops were offered at this AM/PIC in addition to the Tuesday sessions. A survey of membership was completed in January 2007 and results are available on-line. Susan took the leadership on development of the committee poster which was displayed at this meeting. (Greg will take it home and bring it back to the meeting next year in North Carolina.) Susan Kerr was recognized for her contributions to the committee as she steps down. Janet Schmidt will be replacing her. John Dorner and Dave Rice were also recognized for their contributions.
The committee determined that they would like to continue to offer the Tuesday workshops and endeavor to fill holes in the program such as the Sunday afternoon session offered this year as well as possibly a Thursday afternoon session. Potential topics discussed would be those recommended in the 2007 survey as well as: teaching skills in face-to-face environments, how to run a meeting, using PowerPoint, using PowerPoint to develop educational posters (repeat), security, redundancy (having a back-up), technology to improve productivity, using excel for statistical analysis, program evaluation. It was also suggested that a software display might be provided by vendors at the trade show. An application showcase was also suggested – where individuals might demonstrate agricultural information technology applications such as farm record-keeping, disease diagnostics or flora identification in Western states. It was also suggested that state IT people might talk about the “how and why” related to use of information technology. In hands-on workshops we need to include guidelines for the student’s level of proficiency. The classroom set-up worked well for the hands-on workshop on Sunday with it being separate from the lab. We need signs for our workshops.
The committee wants to see state chairs more involved in the committee functions. Vice-chairs reported encouraging proposal submissions as well as providing personal introductions as opportunities for communication. The chair should send information to the vice-chairs and then allow the vice-chairs to communicate directly to the state chairs.
The primary committee goal for 2007-08 is to continue to incorporate the 2007 survey data into the 2008 AM/PIC.
In budgetary discussion the following recommendations ensued: • Poster - $100 • Travel - $800 • Registration – chair & vice-chairs - $1000 • NETC
Scholarship followed by AM/PIC presentation - $500 • Speaker Fees - $500 • Hard wire internet access for presentations - $300 (2 days)
The committee will continue to give thought to the brainstormed suggestions to determine how these ideas might be incorporated and will meet to discuss them at a future time.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
